The much-anticipated Ebonyi State University (EBSU) Student Government election, which was scheduled to take place today, 27th of August 2024, has been abruptly canceled due to technical issues that left many students unable to receive their voting codes via email.
Reports from multiple students across various faculties indicate that they did not receive the unique voting codes required to cast their ballots in the online election. The glitch, which was initially thought to be a minor delay, turned out to be widespread, leading to a cascade of complaints on social media and student forums.
In a swift response, the EBSU Student Affairs while addressing students confirmed the cancellation of the election. “We regret to inform the student body that due to unforeseen technical challenges, the online election for the Student Government has been canceled. The committee is working diligently to resolve the issue and will announce a new date for the election shortly” the statement read.
The cancellation has sparked frustration among students, some of whom have called for a more reliable voting system to be implemented in future elections. Many students were counting on the election to bring about much-needed leadership changes within the Student Government, which has been at the center of several controversies over the past year.
As of the time of this report, the university’s IT department is reportedly investigating the cause of the email malfunction, and further updates are expected later today.
The EBSU administration has urged students to remain patient while they address the situation and assured them that a new election date will be communicated as soon as possible.
