Ebonyi State has come a long way from being the least developed state in the Southeast to becoming a behemoth of infrastructural marvels like never seen in Nigeria. It is almost too good to be true.
From its extensive network of roads and flyovers, to the Ebonyi Mega Shopping Mall, Ecumenical Centre and International Market; there is an abundance of evidence which serve as a testament to the vision of the past administration led by Engr. David Umahi. All these have endeared the state to all and sundry, elevating the pride of Ebonyians in the community of states within and outside the country.
However, there is one question that has been lurking in the minds of Ebonyians and well meaning Nigerians who have come in contact with the developing state and that is
Is the Ebonyi International Airport just another White Elephant Project that was never needed in the first place?
It’s no surprise this question is coming up despite efforts by both government PR to spread the last glimmer of hope in the the mega structure. Right from its inception, the Ebonyi Airport has come under the fire of criticisms for being an unnecessary titan of a project that only served as an avenue for those at the helm of affairs to siphon public funds.
Since it’s inaugural flight in April of 2023, no subsequent flights have been recorded. This therefore, passes the message that there is zero demand for its services. That appears to be true, given that the average Ebonyian is of a low income margin and cannot afford the price of air tickets.
Thought leaders have therefore reiterated that there is an immediate need for human capital projects before giant projects like the airport can attain its full usefulness.
Until we start to see takeoffs and landings of aircrafts (no matter how infrequent, because we have learnt not to expect much from the government), the airport remains a project that was ahead of its time by a long margin.
