Historically, Ebonyi has been known for its rich agricultural potential, particularly in rice farming. The state’s vast arable lands, primarily in areas like Abakaliki, Ikwo, Onicha, and Afikpo, provide an ideal environment for rice cultivation. Over the years, local farmers have honed their skills, and with the recent influx of modern farming techniques, rice production in the state has seen unprecedented growth.
The state government’s commitment to transforming the agricultural sector has been a significant catalyst for this growth. Under Governor Francis Nwifuru, Ebonyi has invested heavily in modern rice mills, improved high-yield rice varieties. Governor Francis Nwifuru while handing over new procured tractors, to the Ebonyi state minister of agriculture, stated that the purpose of purchasing those tractors was for the ministry to go into practical farming “We have procured brand new tractors for the State Ministry of Agriculture to engage in practical farming. Staff of the Ministry are expected to go to State farm lands and justify their positions as staff and workers of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Moreover, the government’s efforts in building a robust infrastructure network, including rural roads and transportation systems, have ensured that rice from Ebonyi reaches markets more efficiently. This has reduced post-harvest losses and increased profitability for local farmers, further encouraging rice cultivation.
The rise of cooperative societies in the state has also played a crucial role in enhancing rice production. By pooling resources and expertise, these cooperatives have enabled small-scale farmers to access credit facilities, modern equipment, and quality seeds. This collective effort has significantly increased the overall output of rice in the state.
